Harriet - A Movie Review from a Christian Perspective

The other day my daughter and I watched Harriet (2019) on Netflix. It was listed as a biopic. I’d never heard of a biopic and had to look it up. It’s a movie that dramatizes a person’s life. As a homeschool mom I like the concept and look forward to more like it but this movie was pretty special. As a Christian I look for movies that aren’t too violent and that usually excludes themes such as slavery but my daughter and I had both taken an interest in Harriet Tubman in our youth and it felt like a movie we could talk intelligently about and maybe bond over so we gave it a go.

I wasn’t expecting it to be religious at all but it was, and not offensively. Harriet was a woman who trusted God wholeheartedly and had tremendous faith. She showed a courage that’s lacking in people today, to do what is right no matter the cost. There was some fighting but nothing overly violent, despite the theme, and I don’t remember anything sexual in nature at all. I don’t remember the language being offensive although there may have been foul language.

We really enjoyed the movie and we hit pause several times to talk about both what was going on and our thoughts on it, which made this movie really great for us. I’d recommend it for ages thirteen and up.
